Varied summer work in network supervision attracts energy students

Summer employees Jonni Päivinen and Olli Temonen are a welcome addition to the Suomen Kaasuenergia Group’s gas distribution network supervision team this summer. This is Jonni’s fourth summer with us as a network supervisor and Olli’s first.

Jonni graduated from Xamk with a Bachelor of Engineering in energy technology in spring 2022. Olli is studying energy and environmental technology at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences.

The variety of network supervision is inspiring

Network supervisors look after our gas distribution networks in many ways. Their working days include supervising excavation near the gas network, annual and condition inspections, creating work orders, talking to customers, preliminary investigations and checking network isolation arrangements. The work is varied and offers both office and field tasks.

“I have enjoyed working as a network supervisor throughout my studies because it has been great to gain direct experience of work in my own field,” Jonni explains. “Besides summer work, I have helped out here part-time alongside my studies. Network supervision is already familiar to me, and much of the work is now routine.”

“The variety of network supervision is definitely the best part of this job,” says Olli. “There has certainly been a lot to learn, but I enjoy getting to know the energy sector better and learning things you cannot learn directly in a classroom. It has also been nice to discover how much contact this job involves with different people.”

IT skills and care are important in network supervision

Network supervisors need to master various software applications and take particular care to ensure essential information is passed on smoothly. Sometimes a quick response is also needed to prevent disruptions in the gas network area.

“Email is the most important tool for work, but beyond that you need to pay close attention to several systems to make sure all the information is correct and reaches the right people. Sometimes an urgent job can also come in with just a phone call,” says Jonni.

“IT skills and a solution-oriented approach are useful in this job. We use several different systems, and you need to resolve different situations carefully but quickly,” Olli adds.

Network supervision provides valuable experience of the energy sector

Jonni and Olli have both enjoyed working as network supervisors at Suomen Kaasuenergia, particularly because of the variety and their interest in a future career in energy.

“This job requires initiative and the ability to make decisions and take responsibility,” says Jonni.

“In the future, I hope to keep working in a role with a good balance of office and field work. At some point, it would be great to focus more on different planning tasks,” Jonni continues.

“I have now worked as a network supervisor for a few months, and I have really enjoyed it. Investing in renewable energy sources is the future, and it is already a major priority here. It is great to follow the sector’s development so closely,” Olli concludes.
