Säkylän Biovoima
A €50 million investment in clean energy and the circular economy
“Demand for renewable biogas is growing rapidly in industry and transport. This project strengthens Finland’s security of supply, advances our national carbon neutrality goals and creates sustainable growth in the Satakunta region,” says Auris CEO Anni Sarvaranta.
Auris Energy is planning a biogas plant in Säkylä with an investment of around €50 million. The plant seamlessly combines the circular economy with renewable energy production.
Support applications are under review in 2026. Construction is targeted to begin in 2027, with production targeted to start in 2029.
The planned plant aims to produce around 130 GWh of biogas per year once production starts. The amount of fossil energy replaced will depend on applications and deliveries. The plant is also intended to produce recycled fertilisers for agriculture in the region.
Combining the circular economy and clean energy
Feedstocks: Around 300,000 tonnes of side streams from local industry and agriculture
Production target: Around 130 GWh of upgraded renewable biogas per year
By-products: Recycled fertilisers for farmland to reduce the use of mineral fertilisers and close the nutrient cycle
Benefits for Satakunta and Finland
- Increases renewable energy production and strengthens energy self-sufficiency
- Reduces the use of fossil fuels
- Promotes sustainable agriculture and security of supply
- Creates hundreds of jobs during construction, dozens of permanent jobs and subcontracting opportunities in the region

“I welcome Auris Energy to invest in Säkylä and to expand and develop our substantial bioeconomy cluster,” says Teijo Mäenpää, Municipal Manager of Säkylä. “It is excellent to have a strong circular economy operator in our municipality. We value our businesses and will continue to create the conditions for business activity and growth in Säkylä.”

Frequently asked questions
What feedstocks will the plant use?
Side streams from local industry and agriculture, around 300,000 tonnes per year.
Could the plant cause continuous odour nuisance?
No. The processes are enclosed, and we treat odorous gases appropriately. Odour treatment will be reviewed thoroughly in the environmental impact assessment. The feedstocks are manure, grass and side streams from local industry, which are not demanding materials in terms of odour management.
Will traffic increase around the plant?
There will be some feedstock transport, but we will route it along the main roads. The future plant is excellently located for logistics, and increased heavy traffic will not disturb local residents. The environmental permitting process includes a traffic impact assessment.
Who will you sell the biogas to?
We will sell biogas to local industry, transport and energy production. Some of the biogas is intended for delivery to the P2X Solutions green hydrogen plant for processing into synthetic methane.
How will local people benefit?
The project creates jobs, increases energy self-sufficiency in Satakunta and generates new business in subcontracting supply chains. Agriculture can improve its profitability through measures such as more efficient nutrient cycling and selling field biomass that would otherwise go unused. A large plant acts as a logistics hub for feedstocks, creating further business opportunities for local logistics providers.
Who should I contact if I am interested in supplying feedstocks or a feedstock partnership?
You can contact our Biogas Business Manager Jani Hautaluoma (jani.hautaluoma@aurisenergia.fi) or Janne Ekholm at our project developer Gas1 (janne.ekholm@gas1.fi) directly. They will be happy to help with any questions about feedstocks or collaboration.
Pipeline route for the project
In January, we held an information event in Kauttua about the biogas pipeline for the Säkylän Biovoima project. The pipeline, around 35 kilometres long, will run from Säkylä through Eura to Harjavalta. It is intended to be completed before the biogas plant.

Project news
Update: Biolan Group and Auris enter a feedstock partnership
Biolan Group and Auris Energy are starting a partnership in which Biolan will supply feedstocks to the new biogas plant in Säkylä as soon as it starts operating. Auris will in turn supply treated end product from the plant for use by Biolan Group.

Update: Preparatory work has started at the project site
We have started preparatory work for the Säkylä biogas plant project. At this stage, the work focuses on the former, decommissioned plant site, where we will later locate biogas and carbon dioxide processes, among other operations.
We are removing loose, unused materials from the site and treating biomass that has previously accumulated there.
The work may occasionally cause short-term odour nuisance. The odours are associated with handling old materials and will disappear as the work progresses. As a result, the current decommissioned plant site will be cleaner and have less odour than before.
We apologise for any temporary inconvenience.
Update: The project investment decision is postponed
On 1 April, we announced that the project investment decision would be postponed due to grant applications. Read more in the news article here.
Environmental impact assessment progresses
The consultation on the EIA programme has ended, and the coordinating authority has issued its statement on the programme.

“The project seamlessly combines energy and nutrient cycles. It reduces emissions, provides industry and transport with renewable biogas and creates local self-sufficiency in a sustainable way.”
