Biogenic CO₂
From a biogas by-product to an industrial raw material.
Biogenic CO₂ as an industrial raw material
We offer locally produced, fully biogenic carbon dioxide as an industrial raw material. It replaces fossil-based inputs with certified circular-economy carbon dioxide.
The carbon dioxide is a side stream of biogas production. For a long time, it has simply been released into the atmosphere.
Our value proposition
Biogenic CO₂ as an industrial raw material
Our solution reduces supply risk, transport costs and seasonal fluctuations. You gain access to a Finnish carbon dioxide stream with verifiable origin and quality.
What we offer
Biogenic carbon dioxide is a side stream of biogas production. Using it as an industrial raw material makes the production value chain more resource-efficient and reduces the need for fossil carbon sources.
Biogenic CO₂
The carbon was originally absorbed from the atmosphere as plants grew. It is part of the natural carbon cycle, unlike carbon dioxide generated from fossil fuels.
Climate impact depends on the application
In specified mineralisation applications, biogenic CO₂ may be stored in a product. The net climate effect and storage duration must be assessed for the application using a verified life-cycle calculation. Using biogenic CO₂ does not in itself create a permanent carbon sink.
A domestic supply model
Production takes place in Finland and the supply chain is short. Transport distances are shorter, and availability does not depend on international supply chains.
Who we serve
Biogenic CO₂ suits organisations for which the origin, availability and climate impact of raw materials are part of their competitiveness.
The origin of raw materials is already a relevant question. Major buyers increasingly require suppliers to provide emissions data for the entire value chain, and origin also comes up in financing discussions.
Building products industry
In the manufacture of concrete and other building products, biogenic carbon dioxide can help reduce the carbon footprint of the product and build a credible low-emission offering.
Food and beverage industry
In food and beverage processes and greenhouse production, carbon dioxide availability, purity and security of supply are essential procurement criteria.
Other industries
The solution also suits other sectors seeking a biogenic carbon raw material, looking to reduce fossil inputs or developing new circular-economy value chains.
How we deliver
Production uses a side stream of biogas production. The carbon dioxide is captured, treated and delivered for industrial use in a controlled process.
Delivery format and availability
- Biogenic carbon dioxide from a side stream of biogas production
- Delivered as liquid CO₂ (LCO₂) for industrial use
- Year-round production when biogas production capacity is in operation
Quality and traceability
- Gas purity is verified against the requirements of the application. Food-grade quality requires a higher degree of purification.
- Verification of origin and the production chain supports responsible procurement
- The solution can be adapted to customer certification and reporting needs
The market is taking shape now
Why we offer this solution
The circular economy is no longer simply a choice based on values. It is underpinned by detailed calculations: price, security of supply and reducing dependencies. These are issues that matter to management in uncertain times.
Finland is well placed in this respect. Electricity prices are among the lowest in Europe, renewable energy production is strong and the network of biogas plants is growing.
Around 3,500 tonnes of biogenic carbon dioxide are generated in Mäntsälä each year. Carbonaide technology binds it into concrete products, permanently removing the carbon from the cycle. This is our first commercial application, but not our last: the model will be replicated in future biogas projects.
“I have often seen the moment when something moves from ‘an interesting idea’ to ‘this is happening now’. Biogenic carbon dioxide is making that transition right now.”
