Finland’s gas market opened to competition at the start of last year and, with the completion of the Balticconnector pipeline, joined the Baltic gas market. For the first time, Finnish gas users could choose their supplier. Both domestic suppliers and foreign companies entering Finland’s market had the same message: the lowest possible price. Yet a small sales margin alone does not guarantee the lowest procurement cost for the buyer.
Before the market opened, gas sold in Finland had traditionally been priced on the basis of oil and gas prices. When the market opened in 2020, customers began to be offered gas linked to European gas exchange indices: TTF and the former Gaspool, now THE. Gas buyers quickly learnt to use the new pricing models, but comparing contracts from different suppliers was not always easy.
Developments in the gas market last year and this year have parallels with the opening of the electricity market in the late 1990s. Natural gas prices are put out to tender, and purchasing decisions are made by finding the smallest sales margin. Often, offers differ by only a few cents per megawatt-hour, with negligible annual savings, if any.
A better way to save on gas procurement than searching for the smallest margin is a genuine energy partnership with the supplier. That is exactly what we at Suomen Kaasuenergia offer our customers. We are the only Finnish sales company focused solely on gas. Our extensive expertise protects customers from sometimes sharp fluctuations in gas market prices. Our gas procurement and portfolio management team alone has more than 50 years of combined experience in the sector.
We are much more than an energy supplier
Our customers always receive a competitively priced gas offer optimised for their consumption profile. We also provide regular market reviews and energy advice, for example on achieving sustainability goals. Our own extranet, SKFlow, makes it easy for customers to monitor gas consumption with up-to-date information.
Planning gas procurement with us for the long term is an excellent way to avoid unexpected costs. We offer price stability to customers of all sizes. Our own SK price index protects against sudden changes because it moves more slowly than exchange prices. Our price-fixing options act as a form of insurance against sometimes substantial energy price fluctuations.
The gas procurement savings achieved with an energy partner like us are on an entirely different scale from those gained by comparing margins. At best, the benefits can amount to tens of euros per megawatt-hour rather than a few cents.
At Suomen Kaasuenergia, we have decades of experience in procuring and selling gas for all kinds of uses. By choosing us as your energy partner, you gain access to all our expertise and the sector’s best gas procurement services. We are here to serve you.
