Two summer employees joined Suomen Kaasuenergia and Auris Kaasunjakelu in April. Nelma Taipale and Jonni Päivinen, both in their early twenties, are working as network supervisors this summer, just as they did last year.
Summer work at Auris Kaasunjakelu fits well with both students’ studies. Taipale is studying construction management, specialising in infrastructure construction, at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. Päivinen is studying energy technology at South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (XAMK).
Both placements run until the end of August, when they return to their studies. Taipale expects to graduate in December this year, while Päivinen will continue studying until spring 2022.
Taipale says her future is still somewhat open, although she has one wish.
“It would be wonderful to continue at Auris, because working here has been so good. I have enjoyed being treated like everyone else, rather than feeling like just a summer employee.”
A good atmosphere helps new employees settle in
Taipale says it has been educational to do the same work as the other network supervisors.
“Right from the start, people have explained the tasks and provided excellent guidance. We first worked together, and I have been given as much responsibility as I have wanted. Here, you are trusted to do your job.”
Taipale gives the working atmosphere, particularly its relaxed nature, full marks. She was already pleased with the atmosphere when she started last summer, which made returning this year an obvious choice.
Päivinen was equally happy with last summer’s job and did not even consider applying elsewhere.
“The work is varied and keeps you on the move, and the other employees are nice. I have really enjoyed it,” Päivinen sums up.
Knowing the basics of energy technology is a great help. Päivinen says the work also teaches a wide range of skills beyond maintaining the gas network.
“In this job, you need to get along with people and be able to agree on things.”
