Peab Asfalt is introducing ECO-Asfalt to the Finnish market, with significantly lower emissions than conventional asphalt. Producing the new environmentally friendly asphalt generates only half the carbon dioxide emissions of conventional asphalt production.
ECO-Asfalt has been available in Sweden since 2015. Peab Asfalt announced that it would begin producing it in Finland alongside its announcement that it was a main partner of Lahti during the city’s year as European Green Capital.
Peab Asfalt will initially produce ECO-Asfalt at its Lahti asphalt plant, where natural gas will be replaced by emission-free biogas sold by Suomen Kaasuenergia and distributed by Auris Kaasunjakelu.
Locally produced biogas cuts emissions in energy-intensive processes
Biogas, used to dry and heat the aggregates required for asphalt, powers the most energy-intensive stages of asphalt production. Switching to Finnish biogas means the energy used for these stages will be emission-free.
The biogas used by the Lahti asphalt plant is truly local. It is produced at Labio Oy’s biogas and composting plant in Kujala, Lahti; Labio is also involved in the European Green Capital project. Labio processes around 80,000 tonnes of waste annually, producing approximately 50 GWh of biogas and 22,000 tonnes of compost.
Biogas is an excellent, immediately available way to reduce industrial emissions
Biogas is renewable, carbon-neutral circular economy energy. It is produced from sources including agricultural, municipal and food industry waste. As a gaseous energy source, biogas burns very cleanly.
Biogas makes it easy to replace conventional fossil fuels, for example in industrial applications. Peab Asfalt’s new ECO-Asfalt product is an excellent example.
If you would also like to use emission-free Finnish biogas, please contact our sales team. We will be happy to tell you more about procuring and using biogas.
Peab Asfalt is one of the Nordic region’s largest asphalt companies, producing and laying asphalt for both private and public customers. It is part of the Peab Group, which has revenue of approximately EUR 5 billion.
Labio Oy is a biogas and composting plant established in 2003. Labio is owned by Lahti Aqua Oy (60 per cent) and Salpakierto Oy (40 per cent). It produces around 50 GWh of biogas and 22,000 tonnes of compost annually. Gasum Oy upgrades and pressurises the biogas for injection into the natural gas network.
Suomen Kaasuenergia is Finland’s largest gas retail and distribution company, owning approximately 900 kilometres of distribution network. It sells natural gas and biogas, as well as steam, heating and cooling solutions. Its customers include major industrial companies, heating companies, properties, developers, restaurants and consumers.
