Ville Karttunen
Development Director

I am responsible for developing new businesses and corporate transactions at Auris. In new business development, we seek growth from clean gases: biogas and, in the future, biogenic carbon dioxide and synthetic natural gas. Corporate transactions cover all Auris Energy operations, from electrifying energy production for industrial customers to gas sales and distribution. I am also a member of the Auris Energy management team and support the CEO in leading the company as a whole.

Tell us about your background and expertise
I am an energy sector generalist, well described by the English saying ‘Jack of all trades – master of none’. I have worked in almost every part of the energy value chain, from nuclear power generation to electricity markets, and from power plant project development to gas and electricity distribution. My particular expertise, however, is change management, which is especially important in developing new businesses. Successful new businesses are, above all, programmes of change. Looking at a new business only from a technology or sales development perspective can mean overlooking factors essential to successful change.
What would you like to tell us about yourself?
Alongside work, my life revolves around my three children – the older twins are in lower secondary school and the youngest is nearing the end of primary school – and outdoor hobbies. You might find me on a tennis court or in the forest, orienteering, hiking or waiting at a moose hunting stand.
Where are energy markets heading?
Understanding the direction of travel is essential to outstanding success in energy markets too. The Canadian ice hockey icon Wayne Gretzky used to say that good players play where the puck is now, but great players play where it is going. In energy markets, the puck is moving towards a world in which energy itself matters less, both commercially and environmentally. What matters more is when energy is used. Energy markets are becoming more volatile. The winners in future markets will be those who manage their energy use and can adapt to changing market prices. They can take advantage of market prices at any given moment, switching flexibly from energy consumer to energy producer and back again.
