Biogas for asphalt production
Biogas replaces natural gas in aggregate processing
Peab Asfalt’s ECO-Asfalt solution uses biogas in asphalt production. In the comparison described in this reference, production carbon dioxide emissions were half those of conventional asphalt production. The comparison concerns manufacturing, not the asphalt’s entire life cycle.
At the Lahti asphalt plant, the solution replaced the natural gas previously used with biogas supplied by Auris.
Biogas for drying and heating aggregate
Drying and heating aggregate are the most energy-intensive stages of asphalt production. Finnish biogas was selected as the fuel for these stages at the site.
The biogas source selected for the Lahti asphalt plant was Labio’s biogas and composting facility in Kujala, Lahti.
Waste as a raw material for biogas
Biogas is produced from sources including organic waste from agriculture, municipalities and the food industry.
At Peab Asfalt’s site, biogas replaced fossil natural gas in asphalt production.
