Halton upgrades heat production through an energy service

An upgrade without capital investment

Halton, known for its ventilation and indoor air solutions, electrified heat production at its Kausala factory through our energy service. The change improved energy efficiency and brought cost savings without Halton making its own capital investment.

We built a hybrid system alongside the factory’s existing heating plant. It combines air-to-water heat pumps, an electric boiler and control based on energy prices.

Electricity and biogas in one system

We integrated air-to-water heat pumps and an electric boiler into the Kausala factory’s heating plant. The existing biogas boilers were retained for backup use.

Heat production is controlled according to energy prices, using electricity and renewable biogas. The system can also participate in electricity reserve markets.

A long-term partnership without major upfront investment

Under the energy service agreement, we are responsible for investment, design, delivery and operation. Halton gained a modern, optimised energy solution without major upfront investment and greater long-term predictability in energy costs.

“It is important for us to act responsibly and proactively, both environmentally and commercially. Auris’s service model lets us benefit from new technology without major upfront investments. At the same time, we gain predictability in energy prices and security of supply.”

Kaisa Säde, Production Director, Halton

Benefits of the system

The solution combines heat production, reduced purchased energy requirements and flexible control:

  • Around 1,900 MWh of renewable heat a year
  • Heat pumps reduce the need for purchased energy
  • Heat pumps use heat from outdoor air
  • Energy sources are controlled according to price
  • The ability to participate in electricity reserve markets

Working within the site’s constraints

Designing the new system required careful integration with the existing heating plant.

We paid particular attention to space requirements and environmental considerations, including equipment placement and potential noise. These issues were addressed together with the customer.
