Meira’s factory in Vallila, Helsinki, has switched from natural gas to biogas in ketchup production, further reducing its environmental impacts.
Founded in 1914, Meira’s factory is one of the few in central Helsinki. It has long used environmentally friendly natural gas, which produces no particulate or sulphur dioxide emissions. Switching ketchup production to carbon-dioxide-free biogas further reduces the factory’s environmental impacts.
Its environmental benefits make biogas an excellent choice for businesses in central Helsinki. Biogas is carbon-dioxide-free, meaning production causes no CO2 emissions, and is entirely domestic. Like natural gas, it is efficient, convenient and safe for industrial and process use.
“We also want Meira’s operations to promote sustainable urban development. Biogas is a natural choice for us, and switching is an important step towards more sustainable production,” says Meira Production Director Patrik Lindholm.
Suomen Kaasuenergia sells and supplies the biogas. “Environmental considerations increasingly influence consumer purchasing, and biogas responds well to this trend. Many food industry companies have switched because environmentally friendly production can add value to their products. At a central-city factory such as Meira, biogas is ideally suited to improving production’s environmental performance,” explains Suomen Kaasuenergia Sales Manager Pekka Karinen.
In Finland, Gasum produces biogas at 12 plants of its own and three partner plants. Gasum Sales Manager Max Miilakangas also emphasises its environmental benefits: “Gasum biogas is a carbon-neutral fuel made entirely from renewable feedstocks arising from industrial and municipal side streams. Environmental choices are increasingly important, and we are very pleased that biogas use has grown significantly in recent years.”
