The expansion of the Mäntsälän Biovoima biogas plant has been completed and brought into production. The expansion doubled the plant’s biogas production capacity and significantly increased its capacity to receive and treat biodegradable waste.
The expanded plant has a biogas production capacity of approximately 33 gigawatt-hours per year, equivalent to the annual energy consumption of thousands of households. The new capacity meets the needs of Mäntsälä’s gas distribution network and also supplies biogas to the national network.
“The expansion increases domestic energy production that supports security of supply. It supports the circular economy and national environmental targets,” Auris Energy’s Biogas Business Manager Jani Hautaluoma says.
Greater capacity and new types of feedstock
The expansion increased the capacity to receive and treat biodegradable waste from 20,000 to 43,000 tonnes per year. Previously, the plant treated only biowaste. It can now also process biomass generated during wastewater treatment. In addition, the plant will produce 65,000 tonnes of recycled fertilisers annually.
The expansion project included building a new biogas reactor, introducing hygienisation and hydrolysis processes, constructing a second waste treatment line and expanding the fertiliser storage facility. Installing a second odour scrubber improved odour control and reduced the plant’s environmental impacts. The expansion received support from the Ministry of the Environment’s nutrient recycling support programme.
“Completing the expansion creates a strong foundation for our future biogas projects, such as the biogas plant being built in Säkylä, where we will draw on the same technical expertise and circular economy solutions,” Hautaluoma continues.
