Hämeenlinnan Osuusmeijeri electrifies steam production
An electric boiler alongside the existing gas boiler
Hämeenlinnan Osuusmeijeri wanted to cut its carbon dioxide emissions and improve cost management. We electrified the dairy’s steam production through an energy service while retaining the existing gas boiler.
The upgrade aimed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from steam production and provide more opportunities to choose the energy source according to prices.
An electric boiler alongside the gas boiler
Electric boilers have become more common in industrial steam production. Hämeenlinnan Osuusmeijeri chose this solution, retaining its old gas boiler to provide flexibility and security of supply.
The dairy has processed milk since 1871. As part of its sustainability goals, it committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and began investigating the electrification of production.
Selecting energy according to market prices
Electricity market prices can vary considerably. Retaining the gas boiler alongside the electric boiler allows steam production to be optimised according to energy prices.
Steam can be produced with electricity when prices are low and with gas when electricity prices rise. The control system takes advantage of price differences between energy sources.
The solution can also support the electricity market by reducing electricity demand when supply is tight.
We are responsible for remote control and operation of steam production, electric boiler maintenance and efficiency optimisation. The dairy’s staff can focus on their own work.
